What Child is This? on CBC, Christmas Eve.

Earlier today on CBC radio a live performance of Sarah Slean doing What Child is This? was played on the show Defenitly Not The Opera.

From 1-2

It's beginning to sound a lot like Christmas on DNTO... and throughout the show, we'll have holiday songs performed live for DNTO from some of our favourite musicians, including Sarah Slean, Shawn Hewitt, Ron Sexsmith, Jorane, Martha Wainwright, and Luke Doucet! To start the hour, Jason Collett will play his own tune, "Beguiled Christmas in Wales."

Sarah's recorded version of What Child is This? is available on the Women & Songs Christmas Album.

Live Recordings and other Slean News.

Recordings of shows from Sarah's 'Solo and Intimate' tour dates as well as her recent 'Christmas Shows' are being put together for a live album. According to Sarah most of the recorded shows were from the churches and the live album might be released as early as next spring.

The December 15 and 16th 'Christmas Shows' of Sarah were both beautiful performances with unique songs, arrangements, and guests. The first guest revealed on the Thursday show was none other then Sarah's grandmother, Mary. Sarah opened the concert with the song that was dedicated to her. The Blue Spruce Quartet then came out to play a full string version of Lucky Me and would join Sarah for over half the nights songs.

Some of the more rare songs for her to do that were played on both nights were, Last Year's War, Narcolepsy Weed, and I Know. In a April CBC radio interview she spoke about the difficulty she had when she last played I Know and how she had no intentions in playing it anytime soon.

The first night's guest artist was Tomi Swick, an opener for her some of her recent dates. She gave him praise as an artist. He played guitar and Sarah kept to the piano as they produced a cover a Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. Other songs that were exclusive to that night's show were:
St. Francis, Somebody's Arms, The Score, and Blue Parade.

The second concert featured Ron Sexsmith as a special guest. Almost a year ago Sarah was Ron's opener and they have come together on a few occasions since. On this night they covered Joni Mitchell's Magdalene Laundries. For the song Vertigo Sarah was joined by Todd Clark from the band Pilate. Sarah sang on an untitled track on Pilate's fourth coming album that is due this Spring. Other songs that were exclusive to the second night's show included Day One, Count Me Out, Duncan, and John the 23rd.

Concluding the show Sarah was given a Christmas Card put together by some of the Passioneers. The inside of the card had the names of fans who over the season had made a donation to a charity of their choice. Sarah was really touched and it was a job well done. The next morning she boarded a flight to Paris but will be back soon and will play the Art Show.

Slean to Perform for a Saro-Wiwa Benefit

REMEMBER SARO-WIWA?
An artistic commemoration and launch for the Ken Saro-Wiwa Foundation

Nov 10, 2005 marks the 10th anniversary of the death of internationally renowned Nigerian writer & activist, Ken Saro-Wiwa. Featuring multiple performances & speakers, the event includes a performance inspired by Ken Saro-Wiwa’s writings directed by Weyni Mengesha (Da Kink in My Hair), as well as an address by Dr. Owens Wiwa, musical performances, spoken word by Spin & D’bi Young, & readings by noted Canadian Rohinton Mistry, Linda McQuaig, & Martha Kumsa.

This event is a part of the Ken Saro-Wiwa Foundation’s commitment to honour the memory & continue the work of Ken Saro-Wiwa. A leader, whose nonviolent campaign to protect the rights, livelihood, & environment of the Ogoni people inspired social change around the world.

The Ken Saro-Wiwa Foundation is a socially driven organization encouraging & facilitating the use of the tools of critical thinking, dialogue & enlightened public debate to advance the cause of marginalized peoples in Africa. The Foundation’s activities will be focused in the areas of minority rights & citizenship, people & sustainable livelihoods, & public education.

Long time fans of Slean will remember the song "Ogoni Star"... It is a song dedicated to and inspired by the great human rights activist Ken Saro-Wiwa. Sarah wrote it after seeing a documentary in university about his life and the incredible story of the Ogoni people. She describes him as "a man so singularly guided by love it was as though his very flesh and bone were made of it."

She will perform the song at a celebration in his honour on November 10th in Toronto's Isabel Bader Theatre at 8pm. "It is my profound, heartfelt honour to be a a part of this event."

A Rare set and a Toronto Date

The reviews from Sweet One and Flare's trip to see Sarah play in Buffalo revealed some great information. Sarah's solo and intimate show included many requests and rare live tracks like Somebodys Arms, The Darkroom, Angle, Me and Jerome, etc. Sarah also debuted a new song, "Say I Was Kind", was also noted on playing other new songs during her warm up.

Sweetone's scanned setlist, song reviews, and Flares venue shots are all available here:
Buffalo - October 29, 2005.

Sarah also told them about her plans to play with a quartet for a special show in Toronto this December.
It will be two nights with nothing but a string quartet, she called them "Christmas shows" but mentioned the possibility of High, so I imagine there will be many non-christmas song amongst the mix, and the plan is to have it at Harbourfront Centre. - Sweet One

Sarah playing @ film festival - review

Show Review:

Today was a stellar day the Canadian Music Cafe, which included slots from Andy Stochansky and Jully Black. Sarah Slean -- who offered Jill Barber one of her comp drink tickets when the bartender charged Jill $12 for a Caesar -- put on a lovely, unaccompanied set of songs mostly from Day One, including "Lucky Me," "Vertigo," "Pilgrim" and "Your Wish is My Wish." Acutely tuned to the day's purpose, she chided the crowd to "turn the fake button off." (Similarly, Jian Gomeshi used his hosting to gig to chastise chatty schmoozers in between sets, which is probably why they ignored him when he tried to drum up some support for locked out Ceebers.)

Event History:
Sarah Slean is one of the artists schedualed to play on September 15th at the private Music Cafe event.
Canadian music will play a leading role in the 30th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) with the debut of the Canadian Music Café, a live showcase event that will feature daytime concerts by Canada's leading and emerging artists. Performers include Buck 65, Ron Sexsmith, K'naan, and Jorane. Located at Sassafraz Café's Jitterbug Perfume Lounge in Toronto's Yorkville district, the Canadian Music Café will run from Sept. 13-15, with live performances between 2 - 5 p.m., and is exclusive to Festival industry delegates.
- CNW Group, Full Article.

Thursday, September 15, 2005
2:00 - 2:30 Alana Levandoski
2:35 - 3:05 Andy Stochansky
3:10 - 3:40 Sarah Slean
3:45 - 4:15 Jully Black
4:20 - 4:50 The Heavy Blinkers
Update, August 25
The offical site of this event with more information is; www.canadianmusiccafe.com

Update, September 13
Although you might not be able to get into this show, you do have a good chance of hearing it.
Sassafraz is also hosting the Canadian Music Cafe. To get in, you have to be a pass holder, but Rossa says he’s keeping the windows open so people outside can hear the music. Artists such as Steven Page, Chantal Kreviazuk, Ron Sexsmith and Sarah Slean are playing, hoping that filmmakers will come, then use their music in movie soundtracks.

Thanks to YenC for the find.

Sarah played a show September 8th

Thanks to betty on the Slean message board we learned the following:

Sarah played a show on September 8th for a party held by Time Magazine and Warner Brothers as part of Toronto Film Festival. Included in the expected attendance of 350 guests were; Val Kilmer, Rober Downey Jr., Michelle Monaghan, and director Shane Black. The event took place at Pür Night Club.

The news release seemed to have come out just the day before the event. I found a short review on the party on Murray Whyte of the Toronto Star's blog. "Sarah Slean was playing the piano, the sushi was yummy and the blue martinis were deadly. It was a delight."

Pictures of the celebs on the red carpet can be seen here, none feature Sarah.

New cover and news from Beachfest

Sarah had a great set under the sunny sky of Beachfest last Monday. Her set consisted for Eliot, Mary, Out in the Park, Lucky Me, and Sweetones. She played the show solo and modified her version of Mary slightly to like the remix.

It looked like K-OS may have been gearing up for a surprise collaberation of the When Another Midnite B-side. He snuck up on stage and hid behind a drum set as Sarah played. In reality he was just trying to prep for his set that followed hers. They did not play together that day although he did drop her name in a freestyle and played the Love Song, which on the album features a sample of Sarah on the album version.

During the headline set of the night Blue Rodeo called up Sarah Slean as a special guest. She did an outstanding cover of the Jayhawks "Blue" with backup vocals being provided by Ron Sexsmith and Steven Page. To see images of the event, see the Flickr badge on the sidebar of this page.

After Sarah's set she did an on air interview with the Mix99. She clearified that "her house buring down" was a metaphor and that Beck on Day One is 'Howie Beck'. She revealed the location of her art show is The Spin Gallery and that she will be working with Nelson Chan again. She also spoke a bit about love, that after Black Widow she "loves film", she "loves the Mix99.9" and that her adventures into many arts is "a symptom of being in love with everything".

The event was filmed and will probally have highlights available to be viewed like last year's Beachfest.

Sarah has also been interviewed in the September edition of Glow magazine. In it, the fan project Passioneers V.1 is mentioned and Sarah states that she is moving to France for a bit to really learn French. She will be touring in the UK/France from Oct1-Oct15th according to her Tour section. Thanks for Sam23 and Boywonder for that information.

Black Widow

"BLACK WIDOW stars several of Canada’s most fascinating recording artists, including Sarah Slean, Martin Tielli, and Mary Margaret O’Hara, as well as acclaimed stage and screen actors Tom McCamus, Julian Richings and Gary Reineke.

Shot in black and white in a visually expressionistic style, BLACK WIDOW is a playfully macabre homage to film noir cinema of the 1940’s."

Thanks to the Sixshooter mailing list, we now have a link to the official Black Widow Film website.

Find cast bios, screening and broadcast dates, picture downloads, song samples and even a preview video clip!

BIG news, from Sarah herself.

Sarah posted today on the main page of the official site a ton of news. Read the entry here, and visit the Vitamins page for more of her words.

To summarize:
  1. Sarah is writing the new record now.
  2. At this time she is self managed.
  3. She is playing 4 songs at Beachfest.
  4. On October 1st-15th she will be touring with Buck65 in the UK/France.
  5. February 2nd is the opening of her art show in Toronto. She will play the opening with a 1 night only ensemble. More information and contest news TBA on the official site.
  6. Black Widow, the film that makes Sarah's acting debut at the Calgary Film Festival this Fall. Over the same season it should air on Bravo and CBC.
  7. Nelson Chan, who we interviewed for his work on the videos for Day One and Mary, has a new project with Sarah. A short film titled "The Baroness" will be animated by Nelson while scripting and scoring will be done by Sarah.
Again, read all the news from Sarah on the official page. We will keep an eye out on these events as they develop.

In other news, a redone video of Mary to the Improbable Pop Remix version has been made. Nelson had wanted to change parts of the original video and with the remix he has had the chance. He has some how managed to include more of Sarah into this video. The Mary (Improbable Pop Remix) audio can be purchased through puretracks.com or the Canadian iTunes shop. This is the version of the song that has been receiving rotation on the radio and fans were asked to request.

Lastly, you may have noticed that on the sidebar of this blog are now some moving pictures. The images are the most recent pictures uploaded to the Sarah Slean group pool on Flickr.
Feel free to browse and upload your Sarah pictures to the group.

At the end of her last tour, Slean admits, mental and physical exhaustion left her so unmotivated that she feared her career in music had come to an end. However, after a show in Almonte, she was attracted to the Ottawa-area town's beauty so much that she stayed -- for four months.

Slean rented a cabin and lived alone, enjoying downtime that not only lifted her spirits, but also cleared her mind and made her eager to return to music.

It was then that Slean recorded her fourth album, Day One, a CD that critics and fans view as her greatest success, thanks to an evolution in a sound that leans more toward pop and rock rather than the lilting Tori Amos-like sound Slean was known for.

"I'd reached a real bottom and a real zero time in my life," she says of the time she arrived in Almonte. "I needed to clean out all of my senses, including my sense of identity. "I wasn't sure whether I'd continue in music, and I felt really adrift. All my dreams were about me being in the middle of the ocean hanging onto a piece of driftwood."

"I was reading way too much philosophy I guess . . . I was looking at the desolate side of existentialism rather than the freedom and optimism that could be found."

In recent months, Slean has enjoyed a growing audience and appreciation for an outlook on life that is different from the way she viewed the world in years past. She admitted to regularly pondering heady issues such as the meaning of life and the conflict between science and religion, and has since discovered she's more comfortable in her own skin living without trying to find answers to questions she deemed unanswerable.

"Sometimes you have to simply be, rather than make life a math equation. That proved very educational to me and I try to cultivate that in my life because thinking too hard about everything, I think it would kill you," she says.

The evolution in her sound and sharper skills have occurred naturally, Slean says, though she approaches songwriting and performing in the way she always has. She acknowledges she's a better singer today than she was in her early days, but believes her progress has resulted from the simple experience and practice, rather than from any mandate to arrive in any new place.

"I hear my voice revealing itself. In the first two records, and even the third record, my voice sounds paralysed in fear and insecurity and hesitation. And I think that's gradually going away as I do music," she says. "I feel the muscles and the various tools you need to employ, I hear them getting stronger."

"I don't really know about my music stylistically. I wouldn't be able to describe any big shift in the sound of my music. It's all becoming clearer to me, I guess."

Some songs on Day One veer away from folk music, but it didn't happen by design. Slean has never altered her approach to song construction. "I try not to think about the final product when I write a song, because to me a song is the melody and the chorus ... a good song is still one that you can play by yourself," she says.

"Some of the folk crowd is narrow minded, but I find that most of them are just fans of music. So I hope they don't throw things at me if I play some rock songs."

What hasn't changed is her view on the realities of performing, which includes the rather unfortunate chore of travel, living out of a suitcase, and dealing with "industry" issues in order to share her music.

"It's a real double-edged sword. The joy and power you get to experience by making art and giving it away, and performing on stage is so thrilling. And that's tempered with the emptiness of travelling," she says.

Another challenge comes every summer when Slean performs outdoors, as she did last weekend, at the high-profile Hillside festival in Guelph, Ont.,and will do again this weekend in Regina. Playing in clubs and theatres aids her sound and performance, and she concedes that she misses those factors when she performs outside to a crowd sprawled in a park.

"A lot of the time, I use the darkness of the hall, and I use that to my advantage and ramp up my character. I guess the difference between the character on stage and the real person goes up a notch," she says.

"When I play outdoors, I just try to trust that when I open the door to the music, people won't throw knives at me. I think that if you are a little bit scared, then the music dies."

A radio remix of Mary has appeared on Toronto radio stations today. Both Chum FM and the Mix 99.9 played the upbeat version today. This is not the same mix that DJ Steve did live from C Lounge that was aired on Chum last month.

Sarah to play 8th Annual White Ribbon Concert

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Sarah will be returning back to the Phoenix concert hall in Toronto on June 7th to play cover songs in support of the White Ribbon Campaign. Thanks to Jareed for finding this news in Chart Attack.

Update, May 27:
Maple Music has worked with the promoter of the White Ribbon Concert to set up tickets and they are waiving ticketing fees with the hopes of raising as much awareness and money for this great cause. To purchase tickets through Maple Music, visit the Boutique page at www.sarahslean.com and click on the tickets link there.

The NXNE Music And Film Festival and the White Ribbon Campaign have announced the lineup for the 8th Annual White Ribbon Concert, to be held on Tuesday, June 7, 2005.

Confirmed participants include guitarist Alex Lifeson of Rush, All Systems Go's lead vocalist and guitarist John Kastner, Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo, singer-songwriters Bruce Cockburn , Ron Sexsmith, Sarah Slean and Emm Gryner and Alexisonfire guitarist/vocalist Dallas Green, who will perform with singer Jully Black . NXNE's 2004 Fan Choice award winner Shawn Hewitt And The National Strike will start the evening off. More names will be announced shortly.

The all-ages concert will follow the traditional, cover-songs-only format, but there will be no house band — a change that one publicity agent “is sure to result in even more musical minglings than before.”

Another change in this year's event will be the absence of the Tea Party's Jeff Martin. He was one of the White Ribbon Concert's main Toronto organizers, but this year he's letting some new blood run the show.

The event will be held at The Phoenix in Toronto. The first 100 NXNE 2005 wristband holders in line will be admitted free of charge. Otherwise, tickets for the event are $25 and go on sale on May 6, 2005 at The Phoenix Box Office, Rotate This, Soundscapes and through Ticketmaster.

For $75 a pop, VIP tickets entitle the bearer to goodie bags, free food, cocktails and better opportunities to meet the musicians. All proceeds from ticket sales go directly to the White Ribbon Campaign.

The White Ribbon Campaign was established in 1991 when a group of Canadian men decided to speak out against violence against women. It has since become the largest effort in the world of its kind. The white ribbon is a symbol of men's opposition to men's violence against women.

Mary Video - First glance on Etalk Daily

During the credits of Wednesday's E-Talk Daily, a first glimpse of the Mary video was available. The style looked simular to the animation of the Day One video mixed with live action from Sarah. Nothing else is known about the video at this point but thanks to Flare for the heads up about the clip being on E-talk.

Here is glimpse of the 3 scenes shown in the 20 second clip:
Looking out a frosty window

Sarah told fans that she will be moving back to the cottage for the time being and will begin the process of working on her next album. She looks absolutely beautiful, and she's quite charming and humble. I wish her luck for her nomination, and she says, "I'm hoping Ron Sexsmith wins... He really deserves it!" She invites us back to her hotel for drinks, but cooler heads prevail—it's late and tomorrow's going to be absolutely packed." - Jeff Hannaford, Flare.com

Project: Scrapbook

Two, possibly three, years in the thought process... Project Scrapbook is finally being put into action and we want YOU to get involved.

Sarah Slean fans across Canada, and well... the world really, are coming together in a unique collaboration to give a little something back to Sarah.

The Idea:

A scrapbook with a page for each fan to decorate however he/she chooses. Write Sarah a message. Draw her a picture. Whatever your little heart desires.

To be included in the project, complete your 12"x12" page (standard scrapbook-sized paper... which you can just cut out of a bigger piece of paper or poster board if you're a guy and don't want to tolerate the social stigma of actually walking into a scrapbook store.) and send it to the project coordinator before mid-June because the goal is to give it to Sarah for her birthday.

Now get off the computer and pull all your sleanster passioneer creativity out from your pillowcases and maybe, just maybe, we'll see it materialize before June 21.

Want more details, check this thread or email me at nicole at littleslean dot com.

Day One video

Sarah Slean, though busy touring and promoting her new album, at some point in the past few months, neglected to mention that she was producing a second music video for the title track to "Day One."

The music video is a refreshing stray from the cliche twenty-something female vocalist video. It charmingly captures Sarah Slean's artistic nature (through animation by Nelson Chan) both musically and visually.

Happy Valentines - Sarah on Mix99

Sarah was on the Humble and Fred radio show this morning on the Mix99. They joked about Sarah missing their Christmas show and the early start time today.

Sarah played Day One with Andrew on guitar. That's the new single and the video has recently appeard on MuchMoreMusic. The Mix99 then opened the phones lines to where a person would talk about their valentine and then Sarah would construct a song a song for them. I believe she made 2 or 3 of these songs with Humble and Fred helping her along the way. They were pretty funny and Sarah seemed to be in good a good mood. She concluded that she return to Toronto to play at the Phoenix Concert Hall on April 16th. That's one big venue .

Keep your eyes and ears open. Have a sweet valentines.
